1. “Atmaskots'' began it's work on April 2020 with the purpose of correcting false or misleading information with aim of encouraging the public to engage with media more critically as well as restoring trust in objective reporting.” Atmaskots” collaborates with the lithuanian Facebook fact-checking project “Delfi Melo Detektorius” however “Atmaskots” aims to establish itself as an independent partner.

2. . The ''Atmaskots'' team consists of two experienced journalists and two editors who keep up with current events and check the information being shared within the public discourse. They research widely shared claims as well as contact experts. The correction to these claims and why they are false or misleading is then explained in an article or a podcast. The partnership ended in spring 2021. CEEPS were not involved in general fact-checks of what was debunked on Facebook and what is Delfi's main fact-checking core, but supported Delfi's podcast about Russian propaganda methods by providing experts and also made articles about Russian disinformation cases. To aggregate all disinformation debunking content in one place we put our fact-checking articles on one page with CEEPS partnership to provide readers larger context.

 3. “Delfi” is a national media and the leading news site in Latvia. According to data, provided by media research company “Gemius”, during the month of December “Delfi” received 904 110 viewers. “Delfi” has been the leading internet news site in Latvia for years with the most prominent social media presence in Latvia, receiving the prize for most influential media site on social networks in 2015, 2016 and 2017. “Delfi” publishes more than 150 articles every day including news, analytic journalism, reportage, videos and interviews. “Delfi” has a large team experienced journalists and editors who report on social issues, government, foreign affairs, sports, culture and other subjects. The main principle of “Delfi” is reporting on current events in neutral manner, allowing the readers to come to their own conclusions.

4. In 2021 “Delfi” plans to pay special attention to fact-checking claims relating to Covid-19 as well as continuing to fight disinformation.

Section 2: A commitment to Non-partisanship and Fairness

To be compliant on nonpartisanship and fairness, applicants must meet these five criteria

  • 2.1 The applicant fact-checks using the same high standards of evidence and judgement for equivalent claims regardless of who made the claim.
  • 2.2 The applicant does not unduly concentrate its fact-checking on any one side, considers the reach and importance of claims it selects to check and publishes a short statement on its website to set out how it selects claims to check.
  • 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. It also discloses in its fact checks any commercial or other such relationships it has that a member of the public might reasonably conclude could influence the findings of the fact check.
  • 2.4 The applicant is not as an organization affiliated with nor declares or shows support for any party, any politician or political candidate, nor does it advocate for or against any policy positions on any issues save for transparency and accuracy in public debate.
  • 2.5 The applicant sets out its policy on non-partisanship for staff on its site. Save for the issues of accuracy and transparency, the applicant’s staff do not get involved in advocacy or publicise their views on policy issues the organization might fact check in such a way as might lead a reasonable member of the public to see the organization’s work as biased.

Criteria 2.1
Proof you meet criteria
Please share links to 10 fact checks published over the past year that you believe demonstrate your non-partisanship.
Please briefly explain how the fact checks selected show that (I) you use the same high standards of evidence for equivalent claims, (II) follow the same essential process for every fact check and (III) let the evidence dictate your conclusions.

A/s "Delfi"

For each fact-check that we do in “Atmakots” we use the same methods described in our ‘Methodology’ section: https://www.delfi.lv/atmaskots/

At first, a journalist find a text to check. We do not check predictions nor information that is an obvious lie and does not need any proof. A journalist uses various sources to find doubtful claims – by listening to broadcasts, conducting search in social networks, reading articles in various media outlets.

In creating materials our fact-checkers always base their claims on facts and fact-based expert analysis and never on opinions. “Atmaskots” selects claims to be fact-checked based on the popularity of the information being spread on the internet. The claims selected for fact-checking are evaluated by an editor. The journalists then search for facts and data to see if the claim is true or false and if possible try to find the source of the claim.

When a claim is selected a journalist decide whether specific claim needs expert opinion or scientific studies, facts and statistics and official information provided by competent institutions. Jornalists also use information verification tools such as Reverse Image Search, Invid, Storyful Multisearch, YouTube Data Viewer, WayBack, Google Public Data Explorer etc.

At first the reader is introduced with the false or misleading information than “Atmaskots” explains why the claim is false or misleading and provides the truth.

  • 3.3 The applicant checks all key elements of claims against more than one named source of evidence save where the one source is the only source relevant on the topic.
  • 3.4 The applicant identifies in its fact checks the relevant interests of the sources it uses where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided.
