Aos Fatos is an organization recognized in Brazil for its fact-checking work and, more recently, for social debunking as well. The organization satisfies the requirements of this evaluation, but there are three suggestions it should evaluate the possibility of adopting: updating revenue data for 2018; give more visibility to the WhatsApp number; and the inclusion in the menu of the pages that give transparency to the organization. These pages are listed only in the footer of the website. The menu is practically all occupied by content pages.

Sergio Lüdtke recommended Accept

Section 1: Organization

Criterion 1a
Proof of registration
Evidence required: Please provide evidence that the signatory is a legally-registered organization set up exclusively for the purpose of fact-checking or the distinct fact-checking project of a recognized media house or research institution.

Aos Fatos

Aos Fatos is a journalistic company trading name. It is registered under the CNPJ 22.408.117/0001-41 as an individual enterprise and its main activity, due to the absence of another legal term, is editing magazines and newspapers.

Aos Fatos is a legally constituted company and already recognized as a fact-checking organization in Brazil. Although the company did not send any evidence of his constitution, the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ) was checked on the Receita Federal website (Ministry of Finance). The registration document does not specifically indicate the fact-checking activity because there is no legal term that defines the activity. So, the company was registered as a magazine and newspaper publisher.

While most of the recent content published by Aos Fatos is the result of social debunking, tagged on its website as "Nas Redes" (In Social Networks), the applicant continues to produce regular reports with its fact-checking results following IFCN standards.

Section 2: Nonpartisanship and Fairness

We continuously fact-check politicians and verify pieces of misinformation from as many sides of the political spectrum as it is possible -- and it can be found here: https://aosfatos.org/noticias/. In 2017, we put on air the Termometer session, that randomly displays on our homepage a variety of fact-checks about politicians from very different political parties and views of the world. We also display on our website menu the option to view our stories database by label: false, exaggerated, imprecise, true, contradictory and unsupportable.

Although the link sent by the applicant is for its complete list of checks and not for specific lists that prove the diversity of the coverage, the variety of points of access to the contents are enough evidence of Aos Fatos' concern with the diversity of coverage. Termômetro, a homepage section composed of images of politicians from different political parties with a link to access fact-checking lists of each, is a good example of this concern.

Criterion 2b
Nonpartisanship policy
Evidence required: Please share evidence of your policy preventing staff from direct involvement in political parties and advocacy organizations. Please also indicate the policy your organization has as a whole regarding advocacy and supporting political candidates.

All members of our team have a small profile on our website: https://aosfatos.org/nossa-equipe/. All of them are experienced journalists that are used to follow a strict code of ethics. In order to be admitted to Aos Fatos's team, our journalists verbally agree not to manifest themselves on social media towards any political preferences, either candidates or parties. They are also informed that they can't freelance at organisations that are related to political parties while working for Aos Fatos. It also means that, as we choose our fact-checkers, it is essencial that they are not formally engaged in any official or unofficial political activities. They, for instance, can't be affiliated with any political party. If otherwise our journalists choose to go against that requisites, they will be immediately removed from their positions.

Our journalists are free, however, to express critical thought on social media and any other media platforms if their subjects are related to fact-checking and journalism, as well as themes Aos Fatos stand up for: open data, transparency and accountability.

Aos Fatos exhorts our readers and journalists to distinguish political matters from partisan ones. All of this is expressed here: https://aosfatos.org/nosso-m%C3%A9todo/.

Aos Fatos states on the page on it describes its method of work the commitments to non-involvement with candidates and political parties. It makes clear that it does not admit the involvement of its employees with parties and advocacy organizations as well.

Section 3: Transparency of Sources

Criterion 3a
Sources Policy
Please share a brief and public explanation (500 words max) of how sources are provided in enough detail that readers could replicate the fact check. If you have a public policy on how you find and use sources for your fact-checking, it should be shared here.

Aos Fatos
18-Mar-2019 (1 year ago)

Our investigations use public data, that can be displayed by any other person with internet access. They are usually extracted from official databases, academic studies and/or FOIA requests. If they aren't available or if they are too raw, we organise them so that our readers can access them. Off the records sources are less common, and, if they are used, it is mainly to give context. We do have a public method of fact-checking: https://aosfatos.org/nosso-m%C3%A9todo/.

Sergio Lüdtke Assessor

Aos Fatos fact-checking reports include a lot of links to primary sources and official databases. In some cases, the data is organized by the team to facilitate access to them.

We have three main sources of funding: media partnerships, crowdfunding and projects. Details can be seen here: https://aosfatos.org/apoie/. We also explain them here: https://aosfatos.org/aos-fatos-lab/. And here: https://aosfatos.org/nossos-parceiros/. Aos Fatos is an individual enterprise under the tax regime Simples Nacional with total gross revenue in the range between R$ 360.000,01 and R$ 720.000,00 (fiscal year 2018).
